Former LSU star Paul Skenes wins NL Cy Young award

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Former LSU star Paul Skenes captured the National League’s top pitching honor Wednesday (Nov. 12), taking home his first Cy Young Award.

The Pittsburgh Pirates ace received unanimous first-place votes from a panel of members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

World Series hero Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers finished second, and Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez placed third. Voting is conducted at the end of the regular season.

Skenes entered his second season favored to win the award, and lived up to the hype.

A lack of run support from a tepid Pittsburgh offense doomed him to a 10-10 record across 32 starts. But his 1.97 earned run average led the league, and his 216 strikeouts in 187 2/3 innings tied for second in the NL, eight behind Logan Webb’s 224 for the San Francisco Giants.

Opposing batters hit a meager .187 this season against Skenes, and the right-hander averaged two walks and 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Skenes, who in 2024 was the NL’s Rookie of the Year winner, has quickly ascended to his status as the league’s best pitcher. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft finished this season at 23 years and 122 days old.

That makes him the fifth-youngest Cy Young Award winner in either league. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only younger Cy Young winners are 22-year-old Vida Blue in 1971, 20-year-old Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, 20-year-old Dwight Gooden in 1985 and 21-year-old Bret Saberhagen in 1985.

Skenes set another record this year when he was named to start the All-Star Game for the second time. He is the first pitcher to receive such an honor in his first two seasons in the big leagues.
