DiamondbacksBack in July, the Arizona Diamondbacks had a fire sale ahead of the MLB trade deadline. They made five deals, all of which sent big league talent elsewhere.

The most notable of the five trades was the pair of deals that sent Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners, both of whom played key roles in Seattle’s run to the ALCS.

Suarez and Naylor were both on expiring deals upon their arrival in Seattle, but Naylor has since signed a five-year extension with the team.

With Naylor’s future all sorted out, what’s next for Suarez?

This is a discussion of a prediction, not a report.

Eugenio Suarez Will Return to the Arizona Diamondbacks

When the trade deadline rolled around last summer, Suarez was the belle of the ball. The DBacks were clear sellers, and through 106 games, Suarez had belted 36 homers and driven in 87 runs, all while batting .248.

Suarez’s numbers dipped in Seattle, but his two-homer outing in a pivotal Game 5 of the ALCS showed why the Mariners were aggressive in pursuing him.

Less than a month since that devastating playoff series came to a close, Suarez is on the open market and searching for a new home.

Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball believes that Suarez will make his way back to Arizona this winter.

“Right now, Jordan Lawlar is slated to be the D-Backs starting third baseman, with Adrian Del Castillo at DH. This team needs a bat, and they already know Suarez fits like a glove. The D-Backs clearly loved Suarez and only traded him because it was the responsible thing to do in a lost season. Suarez slots right back into the cleanup spot in the D-Backs lineup behind Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll,” wrote Finkelstein.

Should The Diamondbacks Sign Eugenio Suarez?

The Diamondbacks aren’t exactly in a position where making splashy free agent signings is a good idea. However, as Finkelstein notes, they’re in need of some pop in the lineup, and a short-term deal for a proven asset makes sense.

Finkelstein predicts that the DBacks will land Suarez on a three-year, $70 million deal. This could align with the priorities of both sides.

Suarez gets stability through his mid-30s, while Arizona lands a player whose found his groove at the plate and is a consistent threat to smash 30 long balls. On the team’s side, they also bring him in without truly breaking the bank.

The Diamondbacks’ top priorities this offseason will likely revolve around adding some talent on the mound and finding a reliable first baseman, but Suarez’s return would certainly help the team’s outlook.

If Suarez is willing to come back on a deal that resembles the one that Finkelstein proposes, the front office in Arizona should absolutely pull the trigger.
