As the MLB offseason fully gets going, the free agent class this season is one of the more well-rounded in recent years. This could see a lot of movement take place, and teams across the league are gearing up for an active winter.
Starting pitching is a strength of this free agent class, and there are multiple teams in the league that desperately need help in that area. With this, players may be looking to receive some lucrative deals, and bidding wars could break out.
One of the more interesting names on the open market is veteran Zac Gallen, who has spent his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallen was seen as a true ace just a few years ago, but his numbers have slipped in recent seasons, including 2025.
The veteran was able to stay healthy this year, but his ERA jumped up to 4.83 for the season. Gallen did get better as the year went on, posting an ERA of 3.97 in the second half, compared to the 5.40 ERA he put up in the first half of the season.
Gallen did receive a qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks, which could complicate his free agency. Many teams don’t like the idea of giving up a draft pick for a player, unless they are a bona fide star.
The Diamondbacks have to figure out what to do with Gallen, and there is some level of interest in him returning to the team. But how this all plays out remains up in the air, and it will all be dependent on how serious contract negotiations go between the two sides.
This is just a prediction, NOT a report!

Zac Gallen Returns to the Arizona Diamondbacks
As Gallen looks around the league for his next team, it makes a lot of sense for him to remain with the Diamondbacks. Arizona isn’t too far off from truly contending again, and if they can bring Gallen back, it would help a lot.
Arizona dealt with all sorts of injuries this past season, and they still almost made it to the postseason. This could see Gallen decide that he wants to stay with the team and finish what he started with them.
If Gallen were to stay, the Diamondbacks could have one of the nastiest starting rotations in all of baseball. The team will be getting ace Corbin Burnes back at some point next season, and putting him into this rotation could make Arizona a true contender.
Due to his struggles over the past few years, the Diamondbacks could potentially get him on a lower-valued contract, which Gallen may prefer to sign with a team he knows. All in all, the two sides should stay together this winter, even if it’s only by Gallen deciding to pick up the qualifying offer.
