After being designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals during the 2025 MLB season, the Boston Red Sox ended up signing Nathaniel Lowe as they desperately needed help with the first base spot.
Nathaniel Lowe helped stabilize the first base role and was a key factor in the Red Sox making a push for a playoff spot in the American League. Now, as 2026 MLB Free Agency is underway, the Red Sox have designated Lowe for assignment once again, just four days in advance of the MLB deadline for cutting ties with players who are eligible for arbitration.
This now means Nathaniel Lowe will enter free agency, and the team that can look to sign him is the Texas Rangers.

Nathaniel Lowe Signs With the Texas Rangers in 2026 MLB Free Agency
While Nathaniel Lowe helped stabilize the first base spot for Boston, overall, 2025 wasn’t his best season, but he still ended up with a .228/.307/.381 slash line. Still, Lowe will be looking to bounce back in 2026, and the perfect team for him to do so on is the Texas Rangers.
From the 2021-2024 timeframe in which Nathaniel Lowe played for the Rangers, he had a combined .274/.359/.432 slash line and a 124 wRC+. Lowe also ended up hitting 78 home runs and 299 RBIs in that span. A return to Texas could be exactly what Lowe needs to get back on track, and in doing so it would help the Rangers out as well.
The Rangers’ first base spot saw some inconsistencies in 2025. They started with Jake Burger, but he struggled mightily at the plate, enough so to where he was demoted to the minors in May. The Rangers missed the playoffs for a second straight year, and if they want to get back there, they need more consistent production from their first base spot.
With the Rangers already having the familiarity with the consistency that Nathaniel Lowe can provide, signing him makes the most sense in this free agency period now that he is available.
