The Philadelphia Phillies added right-handed pitchers Alex McFarlane and Andrew Painter and outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. to the 40-man roster on Tuesday, the deadline to protect players from December’s Rule 5 Draft.
With those three moves, Philadelphia’s 40-man roster sits at 33 players.
Among the Phillies prospects who were left unprotected are Griff McGarry, Daniel Harper, Felix Reyes, Robert Moore, Saul Teran, Christian McGowan, Caleb Ricketts, and Jordan Dissin.
Of this group, the one mild surprise was McGarry, who had a solid 2025 after an injury-filled 2024 season. The right-hander performed well in three minor league levels with a 3.44 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 83.2 innings.
These seven players are now available for the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place at the winter meetings in Orlando on Dec. 10.

Painter is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the Phillies system by MLB.com and as the No. 3 overall pitching prospect in baseball.
Alex McFarlane: A Rising Arm
McFarlane, 24, made 28 combined appearances (18 starts) with high-A Jersey Shore and double-A Reading in 2025, going 4-9 with a 4.84 ERA (43 ER, 80.0 IP), 82 strikeouts and 43 walks.
He was selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft.

He is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the Phillies system by MLB.com.
