Tennessee pitching coach Frank Anderson is expected to leave for a position with the San Francisco Giants, according to a report from Knox News’ Mike Wilson. It’s uncertain what Anderson’s role would be on Tony Vitello’s staff in San Francisco, but he will not be the pitching coach. Vitello hired Pirates pitching coach and MLB veteran Justin Meccage.
Anderson has spent eight years on Tennessee’s staff as pitching coach and was widely viewed as one of the sport’s best. Tennessee’s staff has ranked in the top 20 nationally in team-ERA the last seven seasons, including multiple years in the top 10.
Over the last eight years, 25 Tennessee pitchers have been drafted, including Liam Doyle, Chase Dollander and Garrett Crochet. Dollander was the 2022 SEC Pitcher of the Year after transferring in from Georgia Southern following his freshman season.
Anderson was also the interim head coach during Danny White’s brief coaching search that ended with White staying in-house and hiring Josh Elander as the program’s 26th head coach. Before his time at Tennessee, Anderson was an assistant at multiple stops and spent eight years as the head coach at Oklahoma State.

In the report from Wilson, he noted that Elander will hire Director of Pitching Performance Josh Reynolds to replace Anderson. Reynolds joined Tennessee’s staff following the 2024 season and essentially served as a secondary pitching coach.
Anderson was a bit more hands-off, especially on the recruiting trail, in recent years. Multiple Tennessee transfer portal pitching additions discussed Reynolds while talking about their recruitment. Reynolds was the pitching coach at Cincinnati before coming to Tennessee and also has spent time on staff at Northwestern and Kansas State.
Tennessee has now lost two assistants to the Giants since the MLB franchise hired Vitello as its new manager. San Francisco hired Tennessee strength and conditioning coach Quentin Eberhardt as its new Director of Performance. Elander quickly hired Milwaukee Brewers assistant strength coach Keegan Knoll to replace Eberhardt.
The other hire Elander has made to this cycle is hiring Florida associate head coach Chuck Jeroloman as Tennessee’s new associate head coach.
