The St. Louis Cardinals have now missed the playoffs for the third straight season and took a step back in 2025. The Cardinals have been one of the most competitive franchises in the modern era.
With some of the most notable names in baseball, such as Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright. The Cardinals have not had the same success in finding Hall-of-Fame caliber players in recent years.
With the lack of talent over the past three seasons, the Cardinals must get more active in free agency than they have ever been before. They have some great young talent on the roster, but that is not enough in today’s game.
With all good teams in baseball, the Cardinals must prioritize their bullpen by getting a strong closer. Which is why the St. Louis Cardinals will sign Devin Williams

Devin Williams To Sign With St. Louis CardinalsÂ
Devin Williams has been one of the best bullpen arms in baseball since he got to the big leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019. From 2022 to 2024, Williams has an ERA under 2.00 and has 65 saves in that time frame, barring being the full-time closer.Â
Williams was the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year and was a two-time All-Star in Milwaukee before being traded to the New York Yankees in December of 2024.
Williams did not live up to expectations in the pinstripes, having his worst season as a pro with a 4.79 ERA. The hope for any team that is willing to sign Williams is that last year was a fluke and he would return to the form he was in when he was a Milwaukee Brewer.
The Cardinals would be making a gamble signing Williams for him to return to how he was in Milwaukee, but now is the best time to do that.
The price for Williams has dropped after the abysmal 2025 season, and the Cardinals have never been the biggest spenders in free agency. The Cardinals have relied on their farm system and building from within. Unfortunately, that has not worked as of late.
The Cardinals traded away their closer, Ryan Helsley, to the New York Mets last season and gave JoJo Romero the job for the rest of the season.
Romero had a career year last season with a 2.07 ERA, but if you can get Williams to pitch in the ninth with the experience he has, and Romero in the eighth. You just may have created the best setup and closer tandem in baseball.
Potential Devin Williams Contract
Devin Williams really hurt his stock in 2025 with how he pitched for the New York Yankees. What looked like a possible major long-term deal has now turned into a potential one-year prove-it deal for 2026.
Spotrac.com has Williams projected to sign a one-year deal worth $5.7 million. A team could choose to ignore the 2025 season and sign him to a longer deal.
At 31 years old and a relief pitcher, if a team did decide to sign him to a long-term deal, it would be no longer than three or four years.
However, Williams would probably rather do the prove-it deal and pitch better in 2026 and earn a big pay raise next offseason as well.
Either way, Williams is currently at a bargain deal for the talent he has and has proven to produce just a year ago.
The St. Louis Cardinals are slowly getting lost in the mix of the National League Central. The Milwaukee Brewers have proven to win with whoever they put out there.
The Cubs are willing to spend, and the Cincinnati Reds have a lot of young talent they are hoping will work out. The Cardinals can make a big impact in their standings with those teams this offseason by being active and signing Devin Williams.
