DETROIT – Second baseman Gleyber Torres will return to the Detroit Tigers in 2026 after accepting his qualifying offer, according to multiple reports.
Mark Feinsand, of MLB.com, was among those who reported Tuesday that Torres accepted the $22.025 million qualifying offer to return to Detroit.
By accepting, Torres signs a one-year, $22.025 million dollar deal for the 2026 season and becomes a free agent again next offseason. This also restricts him from being traded until June 15, 2026.
In order for a player to be eligible for a qualifying offer, they must have spent the full season with the team and never received a qualifying offer before.
If Torres would have declined the Tigers’ qualifying offer, he would have become a free agent and could have signed with any team. His new team would have paid a penalty of a loss of a draft pick and international money to sign him.
If he would have signed for $50 million or more, Detroit would have received a compensation pick between the first round and competitive balance round A (early in the draft). If had signed elsewhere for less than $50 million, Detroit would have received a pick after competitive balance round B (later in the draft).
Torres was very solid for the Tigers in 2025, slashing .256/.358/.387 with 16 homers, 22 doubles, 85 walks, and 101 strikeouts in 145 games. He finished with 2.9 WAR.
