Rice University is pulling out all the stops trying to pack its football stadium this weekend for a matchup against in-state foe North Texas.
The Owls (5-5, 2-4 American) will be offering a variety of freebies to students in an attempt to fill Rice Stadium for senior day against the Mean Green (9-1, 5-1 American).
Among the perks for those in attendance with a valid student ID:
– Free beer (21 and up)
Sports Roundup
– Free T-shirt (first 500 students)
– Free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream
– $15 food truck voucher (Kurbside Eatz & Truedog)
After reaching an attendance number above 30,000 for the season-opener against Houston, Rice has hovered closer to 20,000 fans a game the rest of the year. Perhaps the extra incentives can add to the environment as Rice attempts to spoil UNT’s surprising run to a potential College Football Playoff appearance.
UNT controls its destiny in the American, and has a shot to end the year as the nation’s top-ranked Group of 5 team. The Mean Green hold the tie-breaker over Navy and would play for the conference title if they win out against Rice and Temple. Navy is in if it wins at Memphis next week. Tulane must win out and have UNT or Navy lose.
Kickoff in Houston for UNT-Rice is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.
