The Chicago White Sox did some light 40-man remodeling this week, while future owner and noted basketball disruptor Justin Ishbia made a cameo with the Man of the Cloth. While nothing truly seismic happened, and nothing seismic was expected, Chris Getz still managed to squeeze a little action out of what figures to be a relatively quiet offseason.

With Monday’s Rule 5 protection deadline, the Sox had to add any eligible prospects they didn’t want walking out the door for free. They made two moves, placing right-handers Duncan Davitt and Tanner McDougal on the 40-man. No shock with McDougal: MLB Pipeline ranks him as Chicago’s No. 7 prospect, and even the White Sox wouldn’t leave that exposed. Davitt joined the organization at the trade deadline from the Rays in the Adrian Houser deal.

Several notable names did not get protected, including pitchers Mason Adams and Peyton Pallette, ranked 13th and 14th in the system. Right-hander Shane Murphy, who enjoyed a breakout 2025 season despite not being a Top 30 prospect, is now also Rule 5 eligible.

Once the deadline dust had settled, Getz kept working the phones. The Sox traded pitchers Steven Wilson and Yoendrys Gómez to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Everson Pereira and infielder Tanner Murray. Chicago also struck a separate deal with the Boston Red Sox, acquiring left-handed reliever Chris Murphy for minor-league catcher Ronny Hernandez.

The Sox then lost a lefty as Frazier Ellard announced his retirement after two IL stints in 2025. Ellard pitched effectively in stretches but stepped away for family and business reasons.

Gómez received an audition in the White Sox rotation late in the season and looked fine in small bursts, though his overall results were uneven. Chicago originally claimed him off waivers in May after the Los Angeles Dodgers cut ties. Wilson, acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Dylan Cease trade, delivered flashes but never locked down meaningful bullpen value.

New Faces and Familiar Questions Heading Into 2026

Pereira is the most intriguing pickup. Once a Top 100 prospect in 2023 and 2024, he stalled during brief big-league cameos but put up strong minor-league production. He immediately figures into the South Siders’ outfield situation.

Murphy returned from Tommy John surgery in 2025 and quietly posted a 3.12 ERA while working back into form. He should slot into the left-handed relief mix. Here he is allowing a grand slam to Pereira. Seriously.

Murray, Boston’s fourth-round pick in 2020, hit a modest .241/.299/.400 in Triple-A last season. He joins the Charlotte infield competition with an outside chance of surfacing in Chicago.

When the dust finally settled, the Sox added two Rule 5 protections, made two trades, sent out three players (two from the 40-man), received three players, and watched another retire. After all that movement, Chicago’s 40-man roster somehow remains a living organism, if not exactly a threatening one.

What’s On Tap Next?

The White Sox enter the rest of the offseason with a 40-man roster of 37 players, a handful of new toys, and the same big-picture questions they had before the week started. Expect more fringe moves, waiver claims, and “sure, why not” additions as the winter crawls forward.
