Wednesday notes…
A PLETHORA OF RUNS: The Cubs have scored at least six runs in five consecutive games. That is their longest streak of its kind since one of six games April 22-28, 2000. This is their ninth five-game streak since then, including one in 2020 and two in 2023. Their longest such streak was nine games, in 1929 and 1937. They had three streaks of eight games, the last in 1970, and seven-game streaks in 1922 and 1929. The six-game streak in 2000 was their 10th of that length: six in 1923-35, then in 1977, 1987, 1996 and 2000. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
WHAT HAPPENS SECOND: With their win last night, the Cubs’ are 12-5 in second games of series, the same record as in first games. But they are only 5-9 in third games, having started 3-2 and then gone 2-7. After splitting the first two games, they are 2-4. Three times before, they lost the first game and won the second. Then they won at Los Angeles vs. the Dodgers and lost at San Diego and at New York vs. the Mets. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
THE STREAK CONTINUES: Dansby Swanson’s two hits Tuesday extended his on-base streak to a career-high 20 games. In the streak he’s batting.394/.457/.676 (28-for-71) with two doubles, six home runs, 12 RBI, nine walks and 18 runs scored.
LEADING MLB: Seiya Suzuki’s four-RBI night Tuesday tied him for the MLB lead in that category with 43, the same number as Aaron Judge. Suzuki’s career RBI high is 74, set in 2023. At this pace he could go past that by the All-Star break.
Here are today’s particulars.

Cade Horton is making his third MLB appearance and second start. The results (6.00 ERA, 1.222 WHIP) aren’t great, but you can see the talent Horton has, and the Cubs have won both of the games he’s appeared in.
Last time out he threw 79 pitches against the White Sox. 80 pitches appears to be his upper limit, for now, so I wouldn’t expect him to go more than five innings here.
He’s obviously never faced the Marlins or anyone on their active roster — nope, not even in the minor leagues.
Goes to show you how these games just pile up and you don’t remember many individual contests: Max Meyer started against the Cubs Aug. 23, 2024 in Miami. I don’t remember him at all, but maybe I should have, because this happened on that day [VIDEO].
Hey, maybe PCA can do that again. Ian Happ also homered off Meyer that day.
The Cubs might be getting to Meyer at the right time — he’s been pounded over his last four starts to the tune of a 7.97 ERA, 1.721 WHIP and five home runs in 20⅓ innings.

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. You can find out if Marquee is available via a provider in your area here.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
