KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wyandotte County leaders are expected to vote Thursday on renaming an area baseball field after fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming.

The board of commissioners is voting to rename Heathwood Park Baseball Field, at North 10th Street and Parallel Parkway, to “Elijah Ming Memorial Field.”

Ming, who was killed in the line of duty on July 26, grew up playing baseball on that field. His family and friends often spoke about his love of baseball.

He was a member of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office for nine years, the father of a toddler and was married to his middle school sweetheart.

Last week, the Wyandotte County Park Board approved a recommendation to rename the field in Ming’s honor.

The board of commissioners will have the final word before making the change official.
