The Seattle Mariners and Josh Naylor are finalizing a five-year deal to keep the first baseman in the Pacific Northwest, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the deal. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported the deal is pending a physical.

Details on the value of Naylor’s deal have yet to be reported.

Drayer: What Mariners’ reported Josh Naylor re-signing means

In bringing back Naylor, the Mariners are retaining the centerpiece of their 2025 trade deadline haul and checking their stated No. 1 priority off their offseason to-do list.

After arriving as a rental bat from Arizona in a July 24 trade, Naylor provided the Mariners with a needed upgrade at first base and played an instrumental role in the club’s run to its first American League West title and first AL Championship Series appearance in 24 years.

The 28-year-old Naylor immediately became a key cog in the middle of Seattle’s order as a high-contact bat while providing protection behind stars Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez. And his gritty play and quirky personality quickly made him a fan favorite.

In 54 games with the M’s, Naylor slashed .299/.341/.490 with an .831 OPS, 10 doubles, nine home runs, 33 RBIs and a 137 wRC+. He added an unexpected impact on the basepaths with a team-high 19 stolen bases.

Additionally, Naylor provided quality defense at first base, posting five defensive runs saved and five outs above average with Seattle.

Naylor continued his strong play in the postseason. In 12 playoff games, he had a team-high 16 hits and slashed .340/.392/.574 with a .966 OPS, two doubles, three homers, five RBIs and two stolen bases.

Mariners general manger Justin Hollander expressed the importance of bringing Naylor back during an interview earlier this month on MLB Network Radio.

“For whatever reason, he’s just always seen the ball well at T-Mobile (Park) and sort of instantly took off from the moment we acquired him,” Hollander said at the time. “And it was a great fit and it is definitely a priority for us this offseason. If (Naylor isn’t the Mariners’ No. 1 priority), I don’t know what else would be. He’s No. 1 right now.”

A Mississauga, Ontario, native, Naylor is a career .269 hitter with a .777 OPS, 104 home runs and 435 RBIs in 745 games across seven big league seasons with the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Arizona Diamondbacks and Mariners. He was an All-Star with Cleveland in 2024 when he had career highs of 31 home runs and 108 RBIs.

Naylor was one of six Mariners to hit free agency at the end of season, alongside third baseman Eugenio Suárez, second baseman/designated hitter Jorge Polanco, catcher Mitch Garver, left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson and right-handed reliever Luke Jackson. Suárez, Polanco, Garver, Ferguson and Jackson remain unsigned.
