MARYLAND (WBFF) — Maryland’s General Assembly should consider banning or scaling back a type of sports bet — more easily rigged than others — on whether a pitch will be a ball or strike, a state lawmaker said Thursday in response to The Baltimore Sun’s reporting about such “micro bets.
The Sun reported Wednesday that Major League Baseball expressed serious reservations to Maryland regulators in 2021 about allowing such wagers by licensed sportsbooks. But Maryland and many other states opted to permit micro bets, which are now at the center of a pitch-fixing scandal involving two Cleveland Guardians pitchers.
“We definitely should take a strong look at it,” Jason Buckel, the House of Delegates Republican leader, said in an interview.
“I believe the best course of action would be to either outright ban those types of individual-play prop bets or to very significantly limit the amount that could be wagered on those types of sporting activities,” Buckel said.
