According to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, the Diamondbacks have had “some conversation” this offseason about bringing right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to the desert.

After Arizona ace Zac Gallen declined the team’s qualifying offer, the club is left short-handed at the top of its rotation. With Corbin Burnes not expected to return until midseason following Tommy John surgery and Merrill Kelly traded, the D-Backs’ pitching staff is depleted.

In 2025, Giolito went 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts. While not perfect, he bounced back from injury and delivered a solid season. The Diamondbacks are seeking stability in an area that has been inconsistent this year and Giolito could be the first step in reshaping the rotation.

Targeting Giolito would give the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff a boost, though his injury history could complicate a potential signing.

Giolito played one season for the Boston Red Sox after missing 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He continued to deal with issues late in the 2025 season. Boston did not extend him a qualifying offer, meaning any team that signs him would not lose draft picks.

With several key pieces gone, Arizona appears ready to bolster its rotation by targeting one of the top names on the free-agent market.
