SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Kelsie Whitmore, who made history in 2022 when she became the first woman to play in a Major League Baseball Partner league, was selected with the top pick of the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League draft.

“You ask the six-year-old version of me about this opportunity and that it’s happening right now, she would one: probably not believe you, but two: just be so, so, so, so excited for it,” Whitmore said after getting drafted. “I’m excited to be representing the city of San Francisco.”

Whitmore played softball at Cal State Fullerton before her professional baseball career.

She first played baseball at a competitive level for the Sonoma Stompers in 2016. She then went on to play professionally for the Staten Island Ferryhawks in the Atlantic League and the Oakland Ballers in the Pioneer League.

The 27-year-old is a switch-hitting right-hander who can pitch and play the outfield.

The Women’s Pro Baseball League is expected to kick off its first season in the spring of 2026.
