Juan Soto discusses Mets’ failure despite lofty expectations for 2025
After the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention on the season’s final day, Juan Soto discussed what went wrong on Sept. 28, 2025, in Miami.
The Mets front office will continue to have to rebuild the club’s bullpen after a trio of non-tender decisions on Friday afternoon.
The team announced that it would not tender contracts to left-handed relievers Danny Young and Jose Castillo and right-hander Max Kranick ahead of the 2026 season.
All of the other players under control, including David Peterson, Luis Torrens, Tylor Megill, Reed Garrett, Francisco Alvarez and Huascar Brazoban, were tender contracts.
In the cases of Young and Kranick, injuries played a key role in their exclusion from next year’s 40-man roster. After spraining a ligament in his elbow early in the season, Young underwent Tommy John surgery in early May. Kranick underwent flexor tendon surgery in July – a procedure that will keep him out for the majority of the 2026 season.
After missing three seasons after Tommy John surgery and a hamstring strain, Kranick was a pleasant surprise early in 2025. The former starter proved to be a valuable innings-eater out of the bullpen, going 3-2 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 37 innings. Kranick no longer held any minor-league options.
Young appeared in 10 games last season before the injury, allowing four earned runs in 8⅓ innings with 13 strikeouts. He was a key contributor for the Mets down the stretch in the 2024 season after an injury to Brooks Raley, posting a 4.54 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP with 48 strikeouts in 37⅔ and appearing in two games in the NLCS.
With the Mets desperate for left-handed options following injuries to Young and A.J. Minter last season, the Mets added Castillo in a trade with the Diamondbacks last May. He appeared in 16 games, notching a 2.35 ERA with 19 strikeouts before being designated for assignment and claimed by the Mariners in the final month of the season.
The Mets claimed Castillo off waivers on Nov. 6 and he elected free agency on Friday..
