One of the better power hitters in baseball is hitting free agency again, and there are multiple teams interested in his services. This would be infielder Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, and a return to New York isn’t guaranteed at all.
As Alonso continues to look around the league at his different options, the likelihood of him returning to the Mets seems to be a little murky. This could be due to a few reasons, but New York doesn’t seem as intent on making sure that he comes back as they did a year ago.
Overall, the 2025 season for Alonso was strong again, and it could land him a very nice contract on the open market. For the second straight year, Alonso appeared in all 162 games, hitting .272 with 38 home runs and 126 runs batted in.
If Alonso doesn’t return to the Mets, it would then open the door for some other teams to strike on the All-Star, giving the league somewhat of a shakeup. But how his free agency plays out remains to be seen, and will also likely be dependent on where some of the other big names sign this winter.
This is just a prediction, NOT a report!

Pete Alonso Shockingly Lands With Pittsburgh Pirates
One team that could make a play for Alonso this offseason is the Pittsburgh Pirates. While the Pirates have historically not been active members in free agency, the team has already been linked to a few bigger names this year.
Pittsburgh saw an improvement from its young players last year, and it seems that the front office may want to push the chips in, at least a little. Additionally, the Pirates understand that if they were to continue to underperform each each, ace pitcher Paul Skenes could eventually ask out of the organization, or leave in free agency down the line.
This is a big motivation for the Pirates to start making some win-now moves, and adding Alonso to the mix would certainly qualify as that. Putting his power bat into the Pirates lineup would give more legitimacy to this team, and he could act as a mentor for some of the younger guys.
The biggest question in this potential pairing is whether Alonso would heavily consider Pittsburgh since they aren’t seen as contenders. But in free agency, money tends to talk louder than overall teams, and if they were to give him a large deal, it could happen.
If Alonso were part of the group that brought the glory back to the Pirates organization, he would be a hero in Pittsburgh. This could be a perfect landing spot for the slugger, especially if the Mets don’t bring him back.
Alonso would have a chance to play against the Mets multiple times a year moving forward, which could also be a motivating factor here. All in all, it can’t hurt for the Pirates to seriously gauge the market for Alonso, and if the interest is mutual, they can’t let him sign elsewhere.
