BOSTON (WKOW) — The inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League draft made history Thursday night, featuring players from 10 countries.
One of those players was Sun Prairie native Luciana Moreno, selected in the fourth round with the 16th overall pick by Boston.
Moreno first emerged as a standout during her freshman year at Sun Prairie East, later playing for Sun Prairie West’s junior varsity team.
In club play, Moreno became the first high school graduate softball signee for the Night Mares in 2025.
She is currently a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh, playing on the school’s softball team.
Other standouts selected in the draft included Mo’ne Davis, Kelsie Whitmore, Ashton Lansdell, Ayami Sato and Alli Schroder.
The league’s inaugural season is scheduled to begin Aug. 1, 2026, and run through the second half of September. The debut season will feature the four announced teams: Los Angeles, New York, Boston and San Francisco. Games will be held at the historic Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.
