The 2025 MLB free agency signing period has already begun, but things are expected to heat up in the coming weeks as the Winter Meetings (December 7-11) approach.
On the heels of another lackluster season, the San Francisco Giants are once again entering an offseason with hopes of placing a postseason-worthy roster on the field for 2026.
After making the blockbuster move to acquire star designated hitter and infielder Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox during the regular season, Giants president Buster Posey will be active in discussions with free agents as he looks to snap San Francisco’s four-year playoff drought.
While it remains to be seen how aggressive the Giants will be from a financial standpoint in MLB free agency, one veteran writer predicts San Francisco will target two of the top arms available on the market.
MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince laid out some bold MLB free agency predictions for this winter, and he thinks the Giants will land not just one, but two of the biggest names on the pitching side of things: Free agent starting pitcher Framber Valdez and All-Star closer Edwin Diaz.
The Giants will front the free-agent pitching market.
No, not by signing Max Scherzer as a depth piece. But by inking both Framber Valdez, who is arguably the open market’s top starter, and Edwin Díaz, who is definitively its top reliever.
The Giants began to reassert their spending power — their sleeping Giant status, if you will — by taking on the Rafael Devers contract this summer. Now it’s time to fortify the pitching staff fronted by Logan Webb and Robbie Ray.

Adding Valdez would be a huge boost for a San Francisco rotation that currently only rosters two obvious candidates for the Opening Day rotation: All-Star right-hander Logan Webb and former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray.
Valdez, who spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career with the Houston Astros, is expected to be in the market for a new deal in the range of $170-200 million, as did New York Yankees southpaw Max Fried, who inked an eight-year, $218 million deal last offseason.
Diaz, 31, is the best relief pitcher available in this year’s MLB free agency class.
After another All-Star campaign in 2025 that included a 1.63 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 66.1 innings pitched, the right-hander is reportedly seeking a new contract in the four-year, $85+ million range.
The MLB Winter Meetings are set to begin on Sunday, December 7th, in Orlando, Florida. It is there that we will likely see if Castrovince’s predictions come to fruition.

The San Francisco Giants are in need of a big splash this offseason, and free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker will be a player the Giants–as well as several other teams around the league–will be chasing in the coming weeks.
Tucker, 28, is the top free agent available this offseason and will be in the market for a new contract expected to start above the $400 million mark.
While some have expected that San Francisco will be in the mix for Tucker’s services, ESPN’s Jeff Passan pointed to the Giants as a potential landing spot for the All-Star right fielder.
Kyle Tucker is an intriguing free agent due to his age (28 years old), ability to play right and left field in the big leagues, and the fact that he holds a career batting average of .273 and an on-base percentage of .358 over eight MLB seasons with the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs.
