Edwin DiazEdwin Diaz is certainly going to be one of the most coveted arms in MLB free agency, even though he’s just a bullpen specialist.

While it seems like a return to the New York Mets is entirely possible, signing with the San Francisco Giants would be interesting.

MLB Trade Rumors recently put together an article in which Steve Adams, Anthony Franco, Darragh McDonald, and Tim Dierkes all predict where some of the top free agents will land.

When it comes to Diaz, Franco expects him to sign with the Giants.

The article gives a brief rundown on Diaz, explaining that, “Diaz might not be the best reliever in the majors right now, but he’s not far off…it’s always possible owner Steve Cohen could take matters into his own hands and retain his superstar stopper. If not, Diaz is going to draw interest from basically every big-market contender (e.g. Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Blue Jays).”

At this point, the Giants have been brought up for almost every big-name free agent because of their mediocre 81-81 season last year and clear desire to make drastic improvements.

Below, we’ll break down whether Diaz’s potential signing with the Giants would make sense for both sides.

Edwin Diaz Predicted to Sign With The San Francisco Giants

This past season, Diaz had a great year, posting a 1.63 ERA, 0.874 WHIP, and recording 28 saves.

Then, when you look at Baseball Savant, Diaz was in the 91st percentile for his Pitching Run Value, 83rd for Fastball Run Value, 91st for Breaking Run Value, and 49th for Offspeed Run Value.

No matter where he lands, he’ll bring some elite stuff as a closer.

Does Edwin Diaz Fit With The San Francisco Giants?

The more important topic to discuss is whether Diaz fits well with the Giants. Last year, the Giants had some of the best relievers in baseball when it comes to ERA. In 2025, the Giants’ relievers had a 3.48 ERA, which was 4th in the MLB.

Looking ahead to next season, the Giants’ projected closer is Ryan Walker. It’s not as if Walker was awful last year, but he wasn’t necessarily great either. Walker pitched in 68 games, where he had 0.1 WAR, a 4.11 ERA, and a 1.272 WHIP.

Just one year prior, though, Walker had 2.8 WAR, a 1.91 ERA, and a 0.850 WHIP in 76 games.

With those numbers in mind, it’s hard to see the Giants giving up on Walker after just one down year.

It’s more so a question of money at the end of the day. If the cost to sign Diaz wasn’t expected to be so steep, this would be a different conversation.

It just doesn’t make too much sense for the Giants to put a ton of resources into adding a new closer, especially when they’re really in a fine position when it comes to relievers.

Edwin Diaz Stats

Diaz has now been in the MLB for nine years, and he’s put up some really strong stats over his career. In nine years, Diaz has 13.8 WAR, a 2.82 ERA, and a 1.036 WHIP.
