After riding another impressive start by Will Warren to a Tuesday night victory against the Texas Rangers, the Yankees will look to pick up their 10th win in their last 13 games and take the series tonight.

On the mound for the Yanks is Ryan Yarbrough, making his third start of the season. The soft-throwing lefty has been a revelation since signing at the end of spring training, converting from an innings-eater at the back of the bullpen to the team’s interim fifth starter after Marcus Stroman went on the injured list and Carlos Carrasco was DFA’d. He enters play with a 3.70 ERA (106 ERA+) and 4.94 FIP, but those numbers are skewed by a disastrous early April mop-up appearance against Arizona. Since that day, he has a 2.38 ERA in 22.2 innings.

Yarbrough will face off against a struggling Rangers offense that is hitting just .227 as a team with an 86 wRC+ (25th in MLB). He’s likely not going to provide much length (his season high pitch count is 67), but the Yankees bullpen is rested after only using Mark Leiter Jr., Devin Williams, Ian Hamilton, and Luke Weaver last night with an off-day prior. The forecast is extremely grim for tomorrow, so despite some rainy conditions forecasted in the Bronx tonight, they’ll have to get this one in.

Two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom will take the mound against the Yankees for the first time since April 28, 2023, when he exited with the elbow injury that turned into Tommy John surgery. The former Mets ace doesn’t have the 100+ mph fastball he used to, but he’s still made a strong comeback, pitching to a 2.29 ERA (167 ERA+) and 3.50 FIP in nine starts. His strikeout numbers aren’t as dominant as in his prime, but he’s still striking out over a batter per inning.

The Yankees will heavily stack their lineups with left-handed hitters to combat deGrom’s utter dominance against righties (.397 OPS against). Lefties, by comparison, have an .829 OPS against deGrom.

As such, Trent Grisham will lead off with Ben Rice behind him. Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe, and DJ LeMahieu are the only ones who will bat from the right side against deGrom, as Jasson Domínguez re-enters the lineup and play left field, while Jorbit Vivas will bat ninth at third base.

The Rangers will shake things up, as Sam Haggerty leads off. He and Josh H. Smith (batting ninth) are the only ones who will bat from the left side against Yarbrough. Old friend Kyle Higashioka will make his return to Yankee Stadium for the first time since the… Trent Grisham trade? He’ll bat eighth and DH.
