Carson Palmquist’s Major League debut may not have played out like he’d hoped when he gave up five runs on six hits in an 8-0 loss to Arizona, but he has a chance to bounce back tonight when the Rockies (8-40) host the Phillies (30-18).
Palmquist (0-1, 11.25 ERA) was called up on May 16 and made his debut a day later after posting a 3.82 ERA and 2-2 record in seven starts with 45 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old LHP has a knack for striking out batters, averaging 11.84 strikeouts per nine innings in 54 Minor League appearances (53 starts) over four seasons. In his first start at Coors Field, Palmquist is still looking for his first Major League strikeout.
The game marks the third in a four-game series against Philadelphia. In the first two games, the Rockies have lost 9-3 and 7-4. In five losses to Philadelphia this season, including a Phillies sweep at Citizens Bank Park in early April, the Phillies have outscored the Rockies 30-10.
Taijuan Walker (1-3, 2.62 ERA) will get the start for the Phillies. In eight starts this season, Walker, 32, has recorded 31 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. The 2021 NL All-Star RHP is in his 12th year in MLB and has played for five different teams. This season, his best outing came on April 3 in Philadelphia when he put up six scoreless frames against the Rockies. He held Colorado to three hits, while posting four strikeouts and only one walk in a 3-1 victory.
