Gray is going into his 14th season in MLB, playing across five different organizations. He has a 3.58 ERA for his career, while playing for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Last year with the Cardinals, Gray posted a 4.28 ERA on his way to going 14-8 over the course of the season. Gray’s most recent success came in 2023 when he finished second in AL Cy Young voting, losing out to Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.

The Sox will also be receiving $20 million from the Cardinals to help pay Gray’s contract. Gray was set to make $35 million this year, with Boston expected to rework this contract to $31 million for one year.

The Red Sox will be giving up a young prospect in 22-year-old Brandon Clarke. Clarke pitched 38 innings with the Greenville Drive in Class A this year, finishing the year with a 4.03 ERA.

Along with Clarke, Fitts made 10 starts for the Sox this season. He ended with a 2-4 record and a 5.00 ERA as he filled out Boston’s bullpen.

Gray will likely be a solid option behind star Garrett Crochet in 2026, as the Red Sox look to improve on their Wild Card round exit last year.
