The Chicago Cubs have slowly proved themselves as a team willing to spend in the offseason.  However, they have still struggled to compete with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Mets.

The Chicago Cubs should change that right now and prove to everyone they should be feared as contenders in the offseason and the regular Season.

The Cubs finished second in the National League Central and are set to lose their biggest 2025 signing, Kyle Tucker, in free agency. While the Cubs would like to keep Tucker, it might be worth it for the Cubs to let him walk, thanks to his huge value.

The Cubs must replace his bat, however, and not let the lineup get weaker. Their lineup from top to bottom was one of the best in baseball, but it only got them so far.

They should look to upgrade at any position and work out who plays where later, and that is why the Chicago Cubs should sign Alex Bregman this offseason.

Alex Bregman To Sign With Cubs

Matt Shaw had a robust 2025 season for the Cubs. At only 24 years old, he looks to be the Cubs’ future at the position; however, his offensive numbers are lackluster.

The question becomes, will Bregman play third or be moved into a designated hitter role? Bregman only played one game last season as a designated hitter and has played just 15 in his career.

Bregman could take over as the everyday third baseman, and Shaw would be used as a backup or a valuable trade piece to a team that needs defense.

Bregman has been in the league for 10 seasons now and has been one of the most consistent all-around bats out there. He would be vital to uplifting this Cubs roster of young players to the next level.

His defense is above average as well, winning a Gold Glove in 2024 with the Houston Astros. Shaw can not be the everyday player at third with his offense struggles; however, he could be utilized as a late-game defensive sub.

The Chicago Cubs must spend big this offseason and win the National League Central in 2026. They spent on hiring a great manager like Craig Counsell, went in halfway last offseason, and fell short. There is no reason a big market team like them can’t go win the biggest free agent out there.

Potential Alex Bregman Contract

Alex Bregman is set to sign a long-term deal that could be his last in his career. An astounding move opting out of his three-year $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox with an annual average of $40 million.

That is more than what he projects to sign next. Bregman is looking for a long-term deal that is worth more in the long run, with a majority of it guaranteed by the team.

Spotrac.com has Alex Bregman signing a four-year contract worth over $112 million as his market value. However, expect something in the six-year range between $150-$180 million.

Putting him closer to that $30 million annual average. At just 31 years old, Bregman will be looking to find something longer than a four-year deal.

The Chicago Cubs should absolutely lock him in now as the face of their franchise and cornerstone him in the three hole for the rest of the decade.
