The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the best teams in the league for a few years, but they’ve also been one of the most disappointing teams. While they have one of the best rosters, they continue to fall short in the postseason.
This offseason, they’re at risk of taking a big step back. Their MVP candidate, Kyle Schwarber, is headed into free agency and projected to sign a massive $160 million deal, per The Athletic’s Jim Bowden.
The Athletic’s Andy McCullough recently predicted Schwarber would re-sign with the Phillies this winter, which would be a huge step in the right direction for Philadelphia.
“If Schwarber departs in free agency, the Phillies could pivot and find ways to replace aspects of his production through other avenues,” McCullough wrote. “But why mess with a good thing? I would be shocked if owner John Middleton and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski let themselves get outbid.”
This should be a no-brainer for the Phillies.
The front office needs to give Schwarber whatever contract he’s asking for. They can’t afford to lose him to another contender while he’s getting better with age. The slugger is one of the best hitters in baseball, and the fans in Philadelphia love him.
The Phillies need to make some changes if they want to get to the World Series, but Schwarber isn’t one of the pieces they need to improve.
