The New York Mets are coming off a crushing season that was full of disappointment. After adding a lot of talent in the offseason, they missed the postseason as the small-market Cincinnati Reds danced into October.

This offseason, the Mets need to make some big moves, and they’re getting started early. Over the weekend, they agreed to a trade that would send outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder Marcus Semien.

Nimmo was a fan favorite in New York, but Semien was one of the more talented infielders in the American League, and he’s under contract for a few more years.

After the trade, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns sent a message about Semien that should have the fans excited about the addition.

“He’s a winner,” Stearns said about Semien, per Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Semien is a three-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner, and World Series champion. He wasn’t incredible at the dish last season, but he missed some time and didn’t find his stride. From 2021 to 2023, Semien posted 20.2 WAR. When healthy and at his best, Semien is a winner with the ability to change the game in multiple ways.

Losing Nimmo stings, but the addition of Semien should be a good one.
