Pete Alonso is in the conversation along with Kyle Schwarber, Framber Valdez, Bo Bichette, Cody Bellinger, and others as the best free agent for the 2026 class. He’s got teams like the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Mets breathing down his neck for him to sign with their team, but we found the most ideal landing spot for him.
Here’s why the Arizona Diamondbacks need to sign Pete Alonso this offseason.

Pete Alonso Signs With the Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
MLB reporter Jeff Passan broke down his Top-20 Free Agency predictions, and one that he included was Alonso to the Diamondbacks. Here was his analysis:
“As much as the instinct is to target pitching — and, no question, the Diamondbacks need more of that — putting a bopper behind Perdomo, Marte and Carroll to take advantage of the trio’s excellent on-base skills would give Arizona one of the scariest lineups in the NL. Seeing as one particular bopper can play first base or DH, two areas of need for Arizona, the fit feels strong.”
This may not seem possible because the big name teams like the Phillies, Mets, and Yankees could pursue Alonso, but the Diamondbacks could have a real shot at Alonso.
One of the biggest problems with this potential signing is the financial implications because the Diamondbacks aren’t loaded with cash, and only were the 20th ranked team in terms of total cap hit. In addition to potentially not being able to afford Alonso, a potential signing would mean that the pitching would undoubtedly get shafted, and it may not be worth it.
Last season, Arizona was a top-10 offense in baseball as well as scoring the 6th most runs, and they were a year removed from leading the MLB in runs scored.
Arizona, coming off consecutive postseason pushes and boasting a young, talented roster headlined by Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno, could use a true power bat to complement its athletic lineup. The Diamondbacks’ offense thrives on speed and contact, but lacks a consistent middle-of-the-order threat capable of hitting 40 home runs a year. Alonso fills that void perfectly.
Financially, Arizona has room to make a splash. With several young players still on affordable contracts and the franchise generating more revenue after its recent playoff runs, the front office can afford to pursue a big-name free agent like Alonso. The team’s need for a long-term power presence at first base is clear, and pairing Alonso’s power with Carroll’s speed and Moreno’s hitting could give Arizona one of the most balanced offenses in the National League.
From Alonso’s perspective, Arizona offers both competitive opportunity and a hitter-friendly environment. Chase Field consistently ranks among the top venues for home runs due to its dry air and spacious outfield. The Diamondbacks are also trending upward, having proven they can compete deep into October.
For Alonso, joining a young, hungry team ready to win now — while still being paid like one of baseball’s premier sluggers — could be the perfect situation. A Pete Alonso–Diamondbacks union would give Arizona the thump it’s lacked since Paul Goldschmidt’s departure and make them legitimate World Series contenders.
