Coming off an 87-75 season, the Houston Astros should be active in MLB free agency. One way they could do that is by trying to sign Cedric Mullins to add to their outfield.
Mullins is 31 years old and coming off an interesting season. Last year, Mullins was with the Baltimore Orioles before being traded to the New York Mets.Â
With the Orioles, Mullins had a strong year, which is why the Mets decided to make a move and trade for him. Through 42 games with the Mets, though, Mullins was very disappointing.
That up-and-down season has made it really difficult to figure out what’s next for Mullins. Today, we’ll be diving into Mullins’ profile and why the Astros make a ton of sense as a landing spot.Â
This is a PREDICTION, not a REPORT.

Cedric Mullins Joining Houston Astros in MLB Free Agency
To further expand upon how Mullins played last year, he spent 91 games with the Orioles, where he had 0.0 WAR but 15 home runs and a .229 batting average. Not necessarily great numbers, but you can see the appeal for the Mets.
Then, once Mullins got to New York, he had 0.5 WAR, two home runs, and a .182 batting average.Â
On the year, Mullins had a Batting Run Value of -9, which was in the 14th percentile, a Baserunning Run Value of 3, which was in the 90th, and a 0 Fielding Run Value, which was in the 49th, per Baseball Savant.Â
Although these numbers aren’t great, you can’t just ignore the fact that Mullins had a great 2024 season. In 2024, Mullins had 2.6 WAR, 18 home runs, and a .234 batting average.
How Cedric Mullins Fits With The Houston Astros
As of now, Fangraphs has Zach Cole projected to be the Astros’ starting center fielder in 2026. Cole is just 25 years old and was the Astros’ 10th-round pick back in 2022.
Last year, Cole played in 15 games where he had 0.6 WAR, four home runs, and a .255 batting average. It was certainly a strong start, but if the Astros want to get back in the World Series hunt, it would make sense to have a player like Mullins in that spot instead.
The Astros can use that time to further develop Cole and plug him into the outfield when needed. If the Astros really believe they’re contenders, which they should, Mullins makes a lot of sense for this roster.
Prior to 2025, the Astros had made the playoffs eight years in a row. During that stretch, they won the World Series twice. It’s clear what the expectation in Houston is, and having Cole out in center field comes with a lot more risk than Mullins.
Worst-case scenario, Mullins could serve as a very strong depth piece because he shouldn’t be expecting a massive deal.Â
Cedric Mullins Stats
Mullins has spent eight years in the MLB now, where he has put up some impressive stats. During that eight-year span, Mullins has 15.8 WAR, 103 home runs, and a .247 batting average.
Although the Houston Astros aren’t the only landing spot that makes sense for Cedric Mullins, based on the breakdown above, it seems like the best fit for both sides.
