MLB insider Anthony Castrovince wrote an article titled “7 ridiculous trades we’d like to see.” He prefaced the article by saying these trades are unlikely and acknowledged they will anger fans. The last trade he proposed, while ridiculous, could benefit the Texas Rangers.
MLB’s Anthony Castrovince floats ridiculous seven-team trade involving Rangers, Phillies, Red Sox
Bonus Blockbuster: Record-breaking bartering!
*Red Sox get: 1B Jake Burger*
*Rangers get: C Ryan Jeffers*
*Marlins get: 1B Triston Casas*
*Diamondbacks get: RHP Sandy Alcantara*
*Guardians get: 3B Alec Bohm*
*Phillies get: CF Alek Thomas, RHP Braylon Doughty (Guardians’ No. 8 prospect)*
*Twins get: INF LuJames Groover (Diamondbacks’ No. 10 prospect), OF Aaron Walton (Guardians’ No. 19 prospect)*
This deal would break the record for most teams involved in a single trade. It definitely won’t happen. But it’s fun to speculate, and maybe the Rangers could work a three-way trade with the Twins and Red Sox that makes all three teams happy.
In this seven-team trade, the Rangers basically replace catcher Jonah Heim, who was non-tendered by Texas last week, with Jeffers. Jeffers, 28, hit .266/.356/.397 (108 OPS+) with nine home runs and 47 RBI across 119 games this past season. He made his MLB debut in 2020 with Minnesota and has since then accumulated 8.3 bWAR with a 105 OPS+.
Defensively, Jeffers struggled with blocking, framing and throwing out runners last season. He has had defensive success in the past, however, and he should benefit from the new ABS Challenge System. He is projected to make $6.6MM in 2026 per MLB Trade Rumors.
While adding Jeffers in this trade, the Rangers would send Burger to the Red Sox, who would send Casas to the Marlins. Casas underwent surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee in May, which kept him sidelined for the remainder of the 2025 season.
The Rangers might say no to this trade simply because Burger had the worst offensive year of his career with Texas this past season (99 OPS+) while battling a wrist injury, meaning his value is at an all-time low. His defense isn’t great, but there is a good chance he returns to an above-average hitter next year, and the Rangers struggled to hit consistently last season. But adding Jeffers would be a nice addition as well.
