Pete Alonso seems set to be a well sought-after free agent.
That doesn’t meant the New York Mets don’t have a chance to bring him back, though. After all, the slugger they call the Polar Bear is the Mets’ all-time leader in home runs. There’s a sentimentality to his presence in Queens.
There will be plenty of rumors and reports for the rest of the offseason until Alonso gets a contract.

But this weekend, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo took a different path, simply laying out the case for why Alonso will re-sign with the Mets.
It’s a compelling argument from DiComo:
“Who better to fit the Mets’ Pete Alonso-sized hole than Alonso himself? In addition to being the best pure slugger among free-agent first basemen, Alonso is a fan favorite who has continually expressed his affinity for New York. He’s a lifetime Met who wants to be back. No potential replacement would represent quite the same level of slugging threat at the plate. What’s more, last offseason’s tepid league-wide interest in Alonso suggests he might never find the long-term deal he’s seeking on the open market. If the Mets can re-sign Alonso on a four- or five-year contract rather than a six- or seven-year deal, they won’t have the same concerns about the contract ending poorly. Given all that, there’s no obvious reason why this marriage shouldn’t continue.”

That sort of seems to be the sentiment from elsewhere, too. It’s not that Alonso couldn’t leave. It’s just that there isn’t an obvious reason for him to leave.
Another team could swoop in with a much bigger offer. Right now, though, the Mets seem to be as in the running as anyone.
