With the San Francisco Giants looking to improve on the mound to pair another starter with Logan Webb, there’s reason to believe they’ll be interested in some of the top pitchers on the free-agent market.
Among the options for the Giants to pursue, Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez could be at the top of that list.
Some believe the fit is obvious, including Jackson Roberts of Sports Illustrated. He noted that due to Suarez’s high number of fly balls, pitching at a ballpark like Oracle Park could be a significant benefit for his profile.
He predicted Suarez would sign with the Giants on a six-year, $171 million deal.
“Suárez’s case is an interesting one, because he’s never qualified for an ERA title, yet over the last two years, he’s flown under the radar in a Phillies rotation chock-full of superstars. His playoff track record is absurd (1.48 ERA in 42 2/3 innings), and he’s only heading into his age-30 season.
“Because he gives up a reasonably high number of fly balls, Suárez could thrive in a big ballpark, and the San Francisco Giants have long been a paradise for pitchers with that batted ball profile. Plus, we know this Giants front office has no aversion to big-money deals,” he wrote.
$171 million for Suarez doesn’t seem unreasonable.
There’s an argument on both sides for who is better between him and Dylan Cease, but it’s tough to say one is worth $200 million-plus while the other is only worth $170 million.
