The Baltimore Orioles have made a couple of moves this offseason, with their trade for Taylor Ward being the most stunning move thus far. But they’ve also made a couple of bullpen additions, which are just as important.

According to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, the Orioles are signing former St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets closer Ryan Helsley to a two-year deal.

Initially, the compensation wasn’t known. But, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic, Helsley’s contract with Baltimore isn’t a cheap one, as he’s set to make well over $10 million per season.

Orioles make big Ryan Helsley signing

“The Baltimore Orioles reached a two-year, $28 million agreement with right-handed reliever Ryan Helsley on a contract on Saturday, according to a league source,” Woo reports. “The deal includes a payer opt-out after the first year.”

Baltimore found their new closer, with Felix Bautista out, and it cost them $28 million total over two years. The former Cardinals and Mets reliever will be the Orioles’ closer, returning to his role in St. Louis.

With the Mets, he struggled immensely, pitching a 7.20 ERA in 22 outings, only some of which were as a closer or end-of-game reliever.

But in Baltimore, Helsley will reprise his closer role and look to bounce back from his rough stint in New York. He’s a two-time All-Star who led Major League Baseball with 49 saves in 2024.

The 2025 season was a down year, but before making his way to New York at the trade deadline, he had a 3.00 ERA across 36 outings for the Cardinals.

Since 2022, Helsley has a 2.49 ERA across 210 games. The 31-year-old closer is a quality pickup for the Orioles, and he comes at the price of $14 million per season.

The right-handed closer has an opt-out after one season, but if he doesn’t use it, he’ll be in Baltimore for two years at $28 million total.
