DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have re-signed veteran right-hander Tanner Rainey to a minor-league contract.

He’ll be invited to spring training in February as a non-roster player.

Rainey, who turns 33 on Christmas Day, was called up to provide depth in the final week of the season after Charlie Morton was designated for assignment. He pitched in two regular-season games and accompanied the team through the playoffs as a taxi squad player.

Rainey has pitched in parts of eight big-league seasons, most notably with the Washington Nationals from 2019 to 2024. He won a World Series ring in 2019 as a rookie, pitching four times in the Fall Classic against A.J. Hinch’s Houston Astros.

Rainey had an excellent sophomore campaign in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but since then has battled injuries, including Tommy John surgery, and bouts of inconsistency.

Rainey made 11 appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier in 2025 after being non-tendered by the Nationals. The Tigers signed him to a minor-league contract in July after he was outrighted by Pittsburgh and elected free agency.

The Tigers DFA’d and then non-tendered Rainey after the season, but quickly offered him a new minor-league contract.
