As the Yankees look to address their starting rotation this offseason, former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara has emerged as a top potential trade target.
Former general manager Jim Bowden thinks the Yankees are an ideal landing spot for the Marlins ace.
“I also think Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins has a legitimate shot of getting traded to the New York Yankees,” Bowden said on SiriusXM. “I know they’ve had a lot of discussions; I think if the Yankees decided they would give up Spencer Jones—think of this for a minute—they could sign Kyle Tucker in free agency and then trade Spencer Jones for Alcantara.
“Now you’ve added Kyle Tucker and Sandy Alcantara to the team that won 94 games last year, and that would be a game changer for them.”
Alcantara is far from his 2022 Cy Young form — over 31 starts this year, he went 11-12 with a 5.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 142 strikeouts. The 30-year-old missed the entire 2024 campaign recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Alcantara would be an affordable option at $17.6 million in 2026 with a $21 million club option in 2027.
The Yankees were speculated to be in trade talks with Miami for Alcantara and right-hander Edward Cabrera at this year’s trade deadline, but the Marlins held onto both pitchers.
