DETROIT — Free-agent reliever Ryan Helsley, a pitcher the Detroit Tigers evaluated as both a bullpen option and a possible conversion project, has agreed to a two-year, $28 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

Helsley, 31, can opt out of the contract after the 2026 season. He had a phenomenal run as the St. Louis Cardinals’ closer from 2022 to 2025, but he struggled mightily after being traded to the New York Mets at the deadline in July. Even so, he was one of the most sought-after relievers on the market this winter.

The Tigers were reportedly among a handful of clubs intrigued by the idea of converting Helsley into a starter. He came up as a starter after being drafted in the fifth round in 2015, but all 297 of his career appearances have been out of the bullpen.

Helsley will be the presumptive closer in Baltimore, where top reliever Félix Bautista is expected to miss most of the season after shoulder surgery.

The Tigers still might add another starter to the mix after Jack Flaherty somewhat unexpectedly chose to exercise his contract option for 2026.

They will also be aggressive in seeking bullpen upgrades. Right-hander Will Vest and left-handers Tyler Holton and Brant Hurter will be back, but the rest of the group is filled with question marks.

Among the high-end relievers still on the market are Edwin Díaz, Devin Williams and Robert Suarez.
