Jon Heyman of the New York Post is as dialed into the free agency scene as any covering the sport of baseball.

When he offers even the smallest tidbit or morsel of information, there’s usually some real credibility behind it.

Heyman recently revealed some intriguing news on free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger.

“But the Yankees continue to make Bellinger their No. 1 target, plus [the Philadelphia Phillies] and both LA teams are lurking,” he wrote.

Bellinger’s coming off a very good year in which he hit .272 with 29 HRs, 98 RBIs and a .813 OPS. Taking full advantage of Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field, the left-handed slugger is ready to cash in on what could be the last long-term deal of his career.

At only 30 years of age with a real postseason pedigree, Bellinger should have no shortage of options. He’s a plus-athlete with strong defensive skills at several different positions. Toggling between the outfield and first base gives his future team some very prominent versatility worth exploring.

A potential reunion with the Dodgers will only make sense if the value is there. Inking Bellinger to a five or six-year deal might not be the most palatable thing. For the positives Bellinger brings to the table, he does have somewhat of an inconsistent track record.

The power in his game does not resemble what it once did in Los Angeles. Whether a byproduct of past physical issues or a philosophical change, Bellinger has sacrificed some of his ability to hit the ball out of the park in exchange for putting the ball in play and not striking out as much.

From a fit standpoint, Bellinger would make a lot of sense. As is always the case with the Dodgers and their collective thought process, the dollars and years will have to make sense if a pursuit for Bellinger is serious.
