The Miami Marlins have a clear goal throughout the MLB offseason and MLB Free Agency period, and that is to reshape the team entirely for the future. After a season in which they finished with a 79-83 record, they are close to getting back on track, but still have work to do.
One of the ways the Marlins could reshape the team is by trading one of their key pitchers in Sandy Alcantara or Edward Cabrera. While this would get them a significant return, it would also leave their overall pitching depth a bit depleted. They especially need a reliever, as outside of Ronny Henriquez, they didn’t have relievers they could trust last year.
Among all MLB teams, the Marlins’ bullpen ranked 22nd in ERA and 26th in fWAR. They need to find a strong reliever to ensure their bullpen starts to make improvements. To do so, they can turn to free agency and look to sign Pete Fairbanks.

Pete Fairbanks Signs With the Miami Marlins in MLB Free AgencyÂ
To start off the MLB offseason, the Tampa Bay Rays decided to make a shocking move, and that was to decline Pete Fairbanks’ option, making him a free agent ahead of the 2026 season. This comes after he had a 2.83 ERA, 1.044 WHIP, 27 saves, and 59 strikeouts in 2025.
With Pete Fairbanks’ talent, he has shown his reliability throughout his seven years in MLB, as he has a 3.19 ERA, 1.172 WHIP, 90 saves, and 332 strikeouts.
That type of reliability to close out games, as well as his experience, is exactly what the Marlins need to provide a boost to their relief pitching ahead of the 2026 MLB season. Signing Fairbanks would be a step in the right direction for the Marlins to show they are committed to turning things around fully.
The Blue Jays and Marlins are among the teams interested in Pete Fairbanks, per @Ken_Rosenthal.

According to Ken Rosenthal, and Katie Woo, Miami has interest in Pete Fairbanks, so with that, they must do whatever they can to make sure they are able to sign him this free agency period.
