San Francisco Giants fans have been looking for signs that the club might address its bullpen issues in the offseason. Well, if a report is to be believed, then the Giants are adding a veteran arm to come out of the ‘pen in the later innings.
According to a report from Giants reporter Maria Guardado of MLB.com, San Francisco has signed left-hander Sam Hentges to a one-year deal.

Hentges has spent a lot of time away from the field due to injuries. For instance, Hentges missed all of 2025 as he recovered from left shoulder surgery. Hentges had arthroscopic right knee surgery in September. That rehab timeline looks like three to four months.
At this time, the San Francisco front office has not confirmed the signing.
In reality, Hentges takes over a roster spot for left-hander Joey Lucchesi, who was non-tendered from the 40-man roster.
Lucchesi had a 3.76 ERA over 38 relief appearances in the 2025 MLB season.
Hentges and Reiver Sanmartin, who recently joined the Giants, are going to be solid lefty options in games this season for Giants manager Tony Vitello.

Look for right-hander Ryan Walter to take over the closer’s spot for San Francisco this coming season. Then again, Vitello and Giants management might be looking at other options for a closer’s role before next season, too.
Could San Francisco head to the upcoming Winter Meetings and sign Devin Williams, who played last season with the New York Yankees? Williams posted a 4.79 ERA in 67 appearances for the Yankees. Yet there were some other signs that Williams didn’t really pitch all that bad for New York.
Any big-name relief options are not out there for the Giants to consider at this time.
Let’s bottom-line this a bit, Giants fans. The team needs to bolster that bullpen so San Francisco can avoid losing games in late innings. A pitcher like Williams would be a great “get” for the Giants as he has some MLB experience.

Vitello needs to have as many healthy arms as possible next season. And the Giants’ front office doesn’t want to leave him empty handed with a sketchy bullpen.
Might San Francisco swing a deal for another pitcher? Well, it’s possible but they probably will take a look at what’s available in the free agent market and see who would be ready to join the Giants.
