Signed in January of 2023 out of Uganda, David Matoma burst on the scene after reports surfaced that his fastball hit triple-digits while playing in the Dominican Summer League.

He had a dominant first two years playing in the DSL and then for the FCL Pirates in 2024, before finally making it to full-season ball this past season.

Playing in 32 games for Low-A Bradenton, Matoma posted a 4.25 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 24 walks over 42 1/3 innings pitched.

The fastball still touches triple-digits, although he was a bit inconsistent with his velocity at times. He did throw more innings in 2025 than he did the previous two seasons combined, so adjusting to the increased workload could have had something to do with that.

He pairs the fastball with a slider and splitter, although he didn’t throw the latter much in 2025. Both secondary pitches have shown potential, but he is still inconsistent with their shape and control.

Matoma will turn 20 in early February, and he’s still more on the raw side, but he’s still a candidate to move straight to the Greensboro bullpen. Relief prospects can be tricky, especially in the lower levels, but the upside is there to work out of a major league bullpen.

Finding consistency will be key, something that should come with the more he pitches.Â
