New York Mets infielder Brett Baty batted ninth against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, but he was the team’s best hitter. The 25-year-old went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single that put New York up 3-1 in the seventh. It eventually won 5-1.
Baty is now slashing .222/.247/.444 with five homers and 14 RBI across 32 games and broke a three-game hitless streak in Wednesday’s outing. The 6-foot-3-inch, 210-pounder already has more homers than he had in 50 games last season (four).

Baty’s performance came at a crucial time for the Mets, who were mired in their first three-game losing streak of the season. Manager Carlos Mendoza sounded off about the 2019 first round pick after the game, via SNY.

“That’s really good to see. Especially the at-bats against [Garrett] Crochet,” he said. “The first one [Baty’s second-inning RBI single] picked us up big time…for him to come through there…And then I thought he hit a bullet right at the second baseman. And then that one in the seventh…Staying in there, going the other way, coming through big time.”
“It’s just really good to see one of your young players perform and continue to play with confidence,” he continued.
Additionally, Mendoza mentioned how Baty always contributes even when he’s not hot at the plate, via SNY.

“Now, there’s something about the way he’s carrying himself on and off the field, in the clubhouse, the way he prepares,” he said. “Even when he’s 0-for, you can see the way he’s playing defense. That’s what you want to see out of everyone.”
New York is off on Thursday and will host the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend.
