The San Francisco Giants have been reportedly uninterested in chasing high-priced arms in MLB free agency, but a bat like Kyle Schwarber could be more to their liking.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Giants are among the teams that have checked in on free agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who finished the 2025 NL MVP race in second place behind Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.

Schwarber, who will be entering his age-33 season in 2026, mashed a career-high and National League-leading 56 home runs while driving in an MLB-best 132 runs during the 2025 campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

More on free agent DH/LF Kyle Schwarber

While the San Francisco Giants appear to be kicking the tires on Kyle Schwarber’s availability, the Phillies are motivated to keep their prized slugger this offseason.

Many predict that Kyle Schwarber’s next contract will be in the range of $150 million or higher, with the length of the deal reaching four to five years.

As for San Francisco’s interest, it’s possible that the Giants are just doing their due diligence on the three-time All-Star.

Last season, San Francisco swung a blockbuster deal for star third baseman and designated hitter Rafael Devers, who is still owed $254 million over the next eight seasons. If the Giants were to add Schwarber, Devers would have to log most of his playing time at first base, which would block top prospect Bryce Eldridge, who will be competing for a starting spot come Spring Training.

A return to third base is out of the question for Devers, as two-time Platinum Glove Award winner Matt Chapman is slotted in at the hot corner through the 2030 season.

Kyle Schwarber is making a late charge for Hall of Fame candidacy, entering the 2026 season with 340 home runs, 784 RBI, 1,050 hits, and an impressive .846 OPS.

The 2016 World Series champion also boasts a highly respectable walk rate of 14.2 % during his 11-year career, as his 108 bases on balls ranked third among all NL players in 2025.

Whoever adds Schwarber will put their offense in a strong place for the next half-decade, but we’ll have to wait and see if the Giants have a legitimate interest or are just leaving no stone unturned ahead of next week’s pivotal MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida.

More San Francisco Giants content from Sactown Sports

The San Francisco Giants have been linked to several of the top free agent names on the market thus far, but not everyone is convinced that they will be big spenders this winter.

On the heels of reports that San Francisco is eyeing free agent ace Framber Valdez and Japanese star pitcher Tatsuya Imai, ESPN’s Buster Olney threw some water on those reports by relaying some of his own intel.

According to Olney, the Giants’ inquiries on the market have been for “modestly priced arms” rather than the big-ticket free agents, such as Valdez — who may command a deal of $150-200 million — and Imai, who may get a similar contract in the coming weeks.

The San Francisco Giants may not sign a high-priced starting pitcher this offseason, but it’s no secret that their starting rotation needs a boost.

Outside of ace Logan Webb and All-Star left-hander Robbie Ray, the Giants don’t have much stability in their 2026 rotation and beyond.

Former top prospect Kyle Harrison is gone, as is hard-throwing right-hander Jordan Hicks, as both players were sent to Boston in the Rafael Devers blockbuster trade that brought the slugger to San Francisco last season.

Giants prospect Carson Whisenhunt, the PCL Pitcher of the Year in 2025, could factor into team president Buster Posey’s plans for next season, but San Francisco will need more reinforcements.
