The New York Mets’ roster is highlighted by big names such as Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso, but infielder Brett Baty was the main character in Wednesday’s 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. The 25-year-old, who hit ninth in the order, went 2-for-4 with three RBI and drove in New York’s first three runs of the game.
The win snapped the Mets’ first three-game losing streak of the season, and it was their highest-scoring performance since their 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 11. Meanwhile, Baty is now slashing .222/.247/.444 with five homers and 14 RBI in 32 games.

Baty, who hits from the left side, was 0-for-7 with one walk against left-handed pitchers coming into the contest. However, New York manager Carlos Mendoza started the veteran against Red Sox southpaw Garrett Crochet (4-3, 1.98 ERA) anyway.
The decision paid off, as Baty hit a RBI single in the second inning to plate the first run of the game. The 6-foot-3-inch, 210-pounder sounded off about the hit after the game, via SNY.

“[Crochet’s] a mountain of a man [6-foot-6-inches, 245 pounds]. He’s got his arms and legs flying at you, he’s kind of funky,” he said. “And on top of that he throws 98 [miles per hour], so I was just trying to get my foot down early and put a good swing on it.”

Baty also hit a two-run single off of right-handed reliever Liam Hendricks (0-1, 5.56 ERA) in the seventh to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.
New York remains 1.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East. The club is off on Thursday and will host the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend.
