On Tuesday night Edwin Arroyo took the field for Santurce, making his 2025/26 debut in the Puerto Rican Winter League. This is now his third season playing in the league and it’s also the third team he’s played for. Back in 2021/22 he played for RA12 as an 18-year-old. The next year he played with Mayaguez. But he didn’t play in 2023 or 2024.
Arroyo started the game at shortstop for Santurce and was hitting 8th in the lineup. He would draw a walk in his second plate appearance of the game. In the 8th inning he would come to the plate for a third time in his debut and picked up a single on a line drive into center field. It was just the second hit of the night for his club. It would also be the last. Arroyo finished the game 1-2 with a walk in a 4-0 loss.
The Reds shortstop prospect didn’t play in the first 18 games for the club. But there are still 21 games remaining on the schedule before the playoffs begin on January 2nd.
This game was an interesting one from a historical Reds perspective. Prior to the game the team activated three players – Arroyo was one of them. Alexis Diaz was another. And one of the players that was put on the inactive list was former Reds prospect Brian Rey.
In the game itself were more former Cincinnati connections. The starting pitcher for Santurce was Daryl Thompson, who is still kicking around winter ball at age 40. He was with the Reds from 2006-2011 and pitched all four of his big league games with Cincinnati in 2008 and 2011. While Arroyo started the game at shortstop, his teammate on the other side of the bag was Shed Long Jr. He spent 2013-2018 in the Reds organization before being traded to the New York Yankees in January of 2019 in the deal for Sonny Gray and Reiver Sanmartin.
