Although Joey Loperfido was brought over from the Houston Astros not too long ago, he still qualifies as one of the best trade chips for the Toronto Blue Jays, considering the evident outfield logjam. Loperfido seemingly just can’t catch a break, as there are eight on the Blue Jays roster who are capable of playing in the outfield.

This makes Loperfido an intriguing name who could generate buzz on the trade market. He’s ha some success in the big leagues, but also spent a considerable amount of time in Triple-A Buffalo.

Outfielder with lots of upside could headline Blue Jays’ trade talks this winter

The 26-year old, appeared in just 41 games in the majors last year. When he was on the field though, he produced, slashing .333/.379/.500 and hitting four homers with 14 RBIs with an .879 OPS in 104 plate appearances.

Despite the Blue Jays reportedly signing Dylan Cease, who will immiediately be pencilled in towards the top of the rotation, the need for another starting arm is still prevelent, along with a clear desire for some bullpen help. MLB insider, Mark Feinsand, believes that Loperfido is one of the best trade candidates on the team, and it makes complete sense.

Loperfido has yet to fully acclimate himself into professional baseball, as he made his debut for the Astros in 2024 and has yet to play more than 81 games in a season. He initially joined the Blue Jays after a 2024 trade deadline deal in exchange for Yusei Kikuchi.

Unfortunately for Loperfido, his solid bat, above-average speed, and great defensive skills have yet to be fully utilized. If the Blue Jays do end up parting ways with Loperfido, he could warrant a solid exchange in return, since he’s as ready as he can be when it comes to making an impact at the Major League level.

However, every team needs depth pieces who are ready to contribute at a moment’s notice, so it’s not as though the Blue Jays are on a time crunch to move Loperfido. They have to feel they’re getting the perfect player to add to their championship caliber roster for whatever package in which he’s included.

It’s abundantly clear: upper management is hunting for stars, and they’re willing to pay the price to get them. Loperfido’s name will most definitely come up as they search for the kind of difference-makers who can push this team over the edge and avoid another heartbreaking Game 7 ending.
