Blue Jays get doomsday prediction for Bo Bichette.
The Toronto Blue Jays could very well see star infielder Bo Bichette play somewhere else in 2026.
Bichette is one of the top free agents available, and several teams will be after him. The Blue Jays have remained adamant that they will be in Bichette’s market and would like to bring him back.
However, MLB insider Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com predicts that Bichette will leave the Blue Jays and sign with their arch-rival Boston Red Sox, in free agency.
“If Alex Bregman signs elsewhere, I could see Bichette moving to third base at Fenway Park,” Caldera wrote.
Bichette leaving Toronto and signing with the Red Sox would be a doomsday scenario, as not only would the Jays lose Bichette, but he’d go to their heated rival and make them a true World Series contender.
If Bichette does walk in free agency, many Blue Jays fans would hope he would sign in the NL, but Boston could make plenty of sense for him. Especially if Alex Bregman signs elsewhere in free agency.
Bichette hit .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs last season with the Blue Jays, but he did deal with a knee injury in September.
What Will Bichette Get in Free Agency?
Bichette is one of the top free agents available, but his free agent market is an intriguing one.
Many teams view Bichette as a second baseman or a third baseman, but he likely views himself as a shortstop. His market and money could very well change depending on what position the signing team wants him to play at.
MLBTradeRumors predicts Bichette will sign an eight-year, $208 million deal this offseason.
“Looking ahead, it’s possible there are teams that still think Bichette can play a passable shortstop for the next year or two, but his long-term home increasingly seems likely to be at second base,” the article read. “That’s not a position that’s typically well-compensated on the market, but Bichette is an All-Star-caliber hitter whose suspect arm strength would be mitigated with a move to the other side of the bag. …
“Bichette is young enough, heading into his age-28 season, and potent enough in the batter’s box that it’s easy to imagine a team making some room to fit him into the mix by making a trade or two. After Tucker, he’s perhaps the best bet on this year’s free-agent market to clear $200MM in guaranteed money.”
Bichette is a two-time MLB All-Star.
Blue Jays Remain in Bichette’s Market
Bichette has been an impact player for the Blue Jays for years. So, the team is hoping to bring him back.
Toronto has already made two big moves, signing starting pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million deal and pitcher Cody Ponce to a three-year, $30 million deal.
However, the Blue Jays have yet to sign a bat, and general manager Ross Atkins said the team will remain in Bichette’s market.
“Great player,” Atkins said of Bichette. “Bo’s been a significant part of us being in a strong position today and a reason that we’re coming off five solid seasons of baseball and one really, really good year of baseball. He’s had a lot to do with it. I know he’s going to be attractive to the market. We’ll be in his market.”
Bichette has led the AL in hits twice in his career.
