The Winter Meetings are right around the corner, so hold on to your hats: the MLB offseason is about to get wild. Or perhaps mild. We’ll soon find out. Until then, it’s time to continue on our many-months long quest to, as a group, rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization.
In the last chapter of the 2026 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List, we saw a very one-sided vote. The winner by a wide margin was right-handed pitcher Argenis Cayama, who has been voted as the No. 13 prospect in the system. That’s a rise of a 15 spots for the young pitcher, who made his CPL debut last year as the No. 28 prospect in the system.
Cayama became a hot topic this time last year, when it became quite clear that the Giants felt they had something special in the teenager, who signed in January 2024 out of Venezuela. They brought him stateside for 2025, and he immediately began showing why there was so much buzz around him: in 12 starts in the Arizona Complex League, Cayama posted a 2.25 ERA and a 3.58 FIP, with 55 strikeouts against 18 walks in 48 innings, and stuff that looked even better than the numbers would suggest.
A late-season promotion for Cayama didn’t go well, though that’s not surprising given his age — he turned 19 in September. He made six appearances for Low-A San Jose, where he got rocked to the tune of an 8.16 ERA, a 6.93 FIP, and just seven strikeouts against 10 walks in 14.1 innings. Given that he was more than three years younger than the average age of his peers in the Cal League, and that he nearly tripled the number of innings pitched in his debut season in 2024, I wouldn’t read anything into those numbers.
We’ll get a better look at how Cayama, who likely still has a lot of filling out to do, can handle A-ball hitters in 2026, as he’ll surely be in San Jose’s rotation to open the season. It could be a very big year for him.
