On the backs of their lineup, the Los Angeles Angels downed the Athletics, 10-5, to secure their sixth straight win on Wednesday evening at Sutter Health Park. The squad has now won six consecutive games to reach 23-25, and is 14-15 on the road.
Logan O’Hoppe bashed two long home runs, helping to get the Angels’ bats going early. His first, a mammoth two-run shot in the second, traveled 470 feet.
The catcher struck again in the fourth, using a solo blast to bring his season total to 13. Now even with Taylor Ward for the team lead, the duo are tied for the second-most homers in the American League.
O’Hoppe wasn’t the only one in the Los Angeles lineup to tee off throughout the early innings. In the third, Zach Neto launched a two-run shot, his eighth of the season.Â
An inning later, Jo Adell followed O’Hoppe’s second blast with a solo homer of his own to make it back-to-back off Athletics’ left-hander JP Sears. It was the sixth of the season for Adell, and only his second extra base hit since May 11.
Sears, who lasted five innings, struggled mightily to keep the ball in the park. Of his eight hits surrendered, four were home runs, and he exited the contest with six earned runs charged to his name.
Jack Kochanowicz, who made his 10th start of the year for Los Angeles on Wednesday, had his own difficulties preventing the home run. The 24-year-old allowed two blasts, including a three-run shot to Lawrence Butler in the second that gave the Athletics a 3-2 lead.
He managed to work scoreless frames in the third and fourth before getting pulled in the fifth after conceding another longball, this time a solo shot from Nick Kurtz. In total, Kochanowicz allowed three runs across four innings, striking out six and walking five. He did not earn a decision as his ERA rose to 4.86.
Kurtz struck again in the seventh, hitting his second solo homer of the game off Angels’ right-hander Shaun Anderson. The bullpen as a whole, however, was once again effective. In five innings total, the unit allowed just the run from Kurtz’s blast and shut down the Athletics’ momentum.
In the eighth and ninth, the Los Angeles lineup sealed the game with four more runs. Jorge Soler drilled RBI doubles in both innings, boosting him to a three for five day. It was the DH’s first three hit game in an Angels uniform.Â
O’Hoppe, who led the game with three RBI, came around to score on a wild pitch in the eighth on a wild pitch from Athletics reliever Matt Krook. Taylor Ward brought home a run in the ninth on an RBI single, scoring Zach Neto and bringing his hit streak to seven games as he finished three for five.
