DENVER (KKTV) – On Wednesday, the Colorado Rockies announced Josh Byrnes has been named general manager.
In the role, the team said Byrnes will oversee all aspects of baseball operations while reporting to President of Baseball Operations Paul DePodesta.
“I’m incredibly excited to be able to bring Josh into our group,” said DePodesta. “Few executives in baseball share his combination of intellectual curiosity, breadth of experience, and on-field successes. We are extremely fortunate to add him, as he immediately strengthens our entire baseball operation.”
Before the Rockies, the team said Byrnes spent 11 seasons as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ senior vice president of baseball operations. In that role, he supervised the Dodgers’ scouting and player development while helping the team to three World Series championships.
Byrnes was also the general manager for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2014 and the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005 to 2010.
This will not be his first experience with the Rockies. The team said Byrnes previously worked as assistant general manager for the Rockies from 1999 to 2002. He also reportedly worked alongside DePodesta in Cleveland from 1996 to 1998.
He also reportedly served as assistant general manager of the Boston Red Sox from 2003 to 2005. The team said Byrnes began his front office career with the Cleveland Indians in 1994 and was promoted to director of scouting in 1998, before joining Dan O’Dowd in Colorado.
“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Rockies organization, especially at such an exciting time for the future of the franchise,” said Byrnes. “Working alongside Paul again is an incredible opportunity and I’m eager to join him and the rest of the group as we work to bring championship-caliber baseball to the Rockies.”
The team said he is a Washington, D.C. native who attended Haverford College, where he established school records in home runs and RBI.
