The rebuilding of the Colorado Rockies front office took another big step forward Wednesday.

Josh Byrnes, currently working as the senior vice president of baseball operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be officially named as the new general manager for the Rockies, sources confirmed to The Denver Gazette.

Byrnes will work directly under new president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta. Byrnes just finished his 11th season as senior vice president of baseball operations for the Dodgers, capping it with the franchise’s second consecutive World Series title.

Since he joined the Dodgers in 2015, Los Angeles has won the World Series three times and been crowned as division champions in all but one season.

“I’m incredibly excited to be able to bring Josh into our group,” DePodesta said Wednesday in a statement. “Few executives in baseball share his combination of intellectual curiosity, breadth of experience, and on-field successes. We are extremely fortunate to add him, as he immediately strengthens our entire baseball operation.”

Byrnes already has experience working with the Rockies as well, serving as an assistant general manager from 1999 through 2002. After leaving Colorado, the 55-year-old Byrnes has held positions with the San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox.

He joined the Red Sox as assistant general manager in 2003 and, one season later, Boston won its first World Series since 1918. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein praised the role of Byrnes in the franchise’s resurgence, telling The Boston Globe, “He’s a key voice in player personnel. He’s got as much a feel for evaluating and statistical analysis as anyone in baseball. He writes great reports, he has great people skills, and he’d probably be a general manager by now if he were better at self-promotion.”

In all, Byrnes has spent 26 consecutive seasons serving as an assistant general manager, general manager or senior vice president of baseball operations.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to the Rockies organization, especially at such an exciting time for the future of the franchise,” Byrnes said. “Working alongside Paul again is an incredible opportunity and I’m eager to join him and the rest of the group as we work to bring championship-caliber baseball to the Rockies.”

DePodesta told media before Thanksgiving he had a goal of getting some Rockies front office hires in place before MLB’s winter meetings kick off on Sunday in Orlando, Florida.

“I want to make the right decision, as opposed to the quickest one,” DePodesta said as the Rockies navigated the first part of the offseason without a general manager in place.

With the selection of Byrnes, DePodesta has secured the general manager spot as well as the manager role with Warren Schaeffer’s return. Additionally, the Rockies hired Nicky Schmidt earlier this week as the team’s senior vice president and chief revenue and strategy officer.
